Employee Matching Gifts
Does your employer offer Employee Matching Gift Funds??
Many companies, such as 3M, Andersen Corporation, etc. provide matching gift and/or volunteer match programs where the company donates hundreds of dollars to the schools where employees volunteer or contribute financially. Please check your employer’s policies. These financial gifts make a real impact!

Houlton School Bazaar - canceled for 2020 :(
Traditionally each November HPA hosts the Houlton Bazaar and Carnival, our primary fundraising event. Unfortunately HPA has made the difficult decision to cancel this year's Bazaar. We hope to be back in 2021 with another awesome Bazaar because...the funds raised support the many enriching activities, special trips, in-school programs, etc. that are not covered by district funding. The Houlton School Bazaar has been supporting Houlton School programs for over 50 years! And parents have been supporting the Houlton Bazaar for just as long.
The Bazaar involves carnival games set up in nearly every classroom including
Free admission and open to the community!

Scholastic Book Fair (Oct and Feb)
A great opportunity to purchase books for your children or as gifts for others. The Book Fair is set up in the hallway near the Media Center/Library and is open for business before and after school (always in conjunction with Parent-Teacher Conferences). We need volunteers to "mind the store" and keep the Book Fair staffed for the several days it is open. Many spots are available for volunteers to help. Dollars spent directly benefit Houlton Elementary with up to 70% of every dollar spent at our Book Fair coming back to us in Scholastic Dollars to be used to purchase items for our school.
Houlton Book Fairs are convenient, a good value, offer a good selection, and encourage a lifelong love of reading.

Conference Meals (Oct and Feb)
School Parent/Teacher Conferences are an important time to connect. For our teachers, these are long days indeed. But our teachers are committed to each and every parent meeting, whether it's the first one in the morning or the last one in the evening. They are so committed in fact, that finding time to have a good meal often becomes an afterthought. HPA has been providing Conference Meals for our teacher community as a show of support. And it's always very appreciated.

December Activities
Grant's Toybox/Cheers for Children
Grant was a student at Houlton Elementary, and his legacy lives on as today's students learn about courage, grace and caring for others. Each year, the students donate gifts which are taken to the hospital to share with children who spend the holidays in the hospital.

All School Skate - canceled (or postponed?) for 2020
This longstanding Houlton School tradition happens because of a lot of parent support. First, parent volunteers get the school's many donated ice skates out of storage. Next, we have 1-2 try on days where volunteers collect students from each classroom who indicated that they would like to use school skates for this event. We help kids try on skates, check them out, and send them back with the student to use on Skate Day (they keep them on their hooks). Parents also help at the ice rink getting skates on and off kids. Finally, skates get returned, checked back in, and put back in storage.

Prairie Fire Theatre (March 2021?)
Prairie Fire Children's Theatre (PFCT) is a professional theatre company which brings the joy of live performance theatre to schools throughout the region. Prairie Fire Children's Theatre sends two professional Actors/Directors to our school for a one week residency. Our students fill the roles, and PFCT provides everything needed to do the show. After a week of rehearsing, the cast performs the play twice on Friday in the gym. Rehearsals take place after school, usually 3:45 -8:00 pm M-Th. Parent volunteers are needed each evening to help maintain order and discipline during this challenging week. Volunteers also provide one hot meal, and help with costume & makeup and after-performance costume check in. Volunteers are also needed to help with programs, a cast board, lighting set-up and other "back of stage" duties. This event keeps coming back to Houlton because of the enthusiastic participation of our students.

Family Nights/Family Fun& Fitness Days - TBD for 2020-21
Family Fun and Fitness Events occur on a month to month basis in conjunction with Family Fun and Fitness monthly goal sheets shared with students. Prizes are shared at monthly all-school meetings and students are recognized for working toward fitness goals. These gatherings take place during the school day for about an hour. Volunteers may or may not be needed - watch your school newsletter for more information as these events are planned.
Family Nights have focused on math, literacy and fitness/healthy eating. Families get together on a weekday evening to participate in fun activities at school with their child. Suggestions for family night themes are always welcome.

Art Adventure - currently on hold for 2020-21
In collaboration with the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, the Art Adventure Program introduces our students, K-5, to works of art from a variety of cultures. Trained school volunteers (that could be you!) visit classrooms with posters of art relating to a common theme such as animals, celebrations, relationships, etc. Learn more here or just dive in and agree to become one of our trained art guides.

Junior Achievement - currently on hold for 2020-21
Purpose: To inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy.
Mission: To ensure that every child in Wisconsin has an opportunity to obtain an understanding of the free enterprise system.
Since 1941, Wisconsin students from kindergarten on have been brought face to face with volunteers who have opened their eyes to business and economics through Junior Achievement. JA programs empower students to make a connection between what they learn in school and how it can be applied in the real world – enhancing the relevance of their classroom learning and increasing their understanding of the value of staying in school. Kits are provided to volunteers who teach the lessons with a very easy to follow plan. Houlton teachers all welcome this great addition to classroom learning.

In-Class Volunteering - currently on hold for 2020-21
Teachers often put out a call for volunteers at the start of the school year -- this is often for a set time period/set day(s) per week. Classroom needs vary and change - talk to your child's teacher if you've got time to share.
Staff Appreciation Week (May)
We always want our teaching staff to know how much we appreciate their hard work and dedication. Like Mother's Day, Father's Day, your Birthday --it's a day to be recognized. We use Staff Appreciation week as an opportunity to share our gratitude and say -Thanks!

5th Grade Party
1-2 parents have organized this event in the past. They work with Ms. Augustin and Mr. Sahli to select a date, send out the email invitation and plan a meal (hot dogs, pulled pork, pizza, etc. -- others parents have provided side dishes). This celebration has traditionally been held at St. Joseph Town Hall, after school hours, with a special game involving kids, parents and teachers. It's a fun, social gathering -- and much anticipated by the 5th grade class!
